Mariano Narodowski (born 1961) is an Argentine education scholar and professor at Torcuato di Tella University (UTDT). His research has focused on the privatization of education, school choice and segregation, and the future of schooling and childhood. From 2007 to 2009 he served as Minister of Education of the City of Buenos Aires under Mayor Mauricio Macri.[1] He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2002[2] and received the Latin America SIG (CIES) Outstanding Scholar Award in 2016.[3][4]

Biography

Narodowski was born in Buenos Aires in 1961.[5] He studied pedagogy at Universidad CAECE, earned a master’s degree in social sciences from FLACSO (Argentina), and a doctorate in education from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil.[6] In 2006–2007 he was a De Fortabat Visiting Scholar at Harvard University’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies.[7]

Academic career and research

At Torcuato di Tella University he has been a full professor in education, directing or contributing to UTDT’s education programs.[8] His peer-reviewed work in English includes articles in the Journal of Education Policy, Comparative Education, Compare, and Paedagogica Historica, often addressing school privatization, school choice, and socio-economic segregation:[9][10][11][12] In 2016 he published on educational pluralism and state schooling in Policy Futures in Education.[13]

Narodowski authored the English report The Chile Experiment (2018), comparing Chile’s school-choice model with Latin American quasi-monopoly systems, focusing on outcomes and segregation.[1] His later work has also explored scenarios for the future of schooling and technology.[14]

Public office

Narodowski was appointed Minister of Education of the City of Buenos Aires on 10 December 2007 and served until 11 December 2009.[1] He was succeeded by writer and diplomat Abel Posse.[15]

In May 2010, amid the “Buenos Aires wiretapping case,” Federal Judge Norberto Oyarbide indicted Mayor Macri and former city education minister Narodowski; English-language reporting at the time noted both were prosecuted in connection with alleged illegal wiretaps. Narodowski denied wrongdoing.[16] Subsequent rulings in related proceedings included the dismissal of charges against Macri in 2015; coverage and summaries are available in English sources and case overviews.[17]
