The Zamuran Hills (Urdu: زامُران) are a mountain range located in the Kech District of the Makran region in southwest Balochistan. The hills form a natural boundary between the Buleda valley to the south and the Panjgur District to the north, extending westward toward the Iran–Pakistan border.[2]
In 2016, the area was formally established as the Zamoran Tehsil, an administrative subdivision of Kech District.[3]
Etymology
The name "Zamuran" is derived from the Balochi word Zamor, referring to a leafy tree common in the region's valleys. Local folklore also suggests the name comes from a combination of the words Zaa (abuse) and Miran (shall die), reflecting a tribal philosophy that the inhabitants would rather die than suffer dishonor.[3]
Geography
The Zamuran Hills are a part of the greater Central Makran Range. The terrain is rugged and characterized by high peaks, small fertile valleys, and natural springs. The range acts as a watershed for the Gishkaur river system. The climate is arid, with extreme temperature variations between summer and winter.[4]
History
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Zamuran region was known for its fierce tribal independence. While rulers in other parts of Makran (such as the Nawabs) successfully collected taxes on livestock and trees, the tribes of Zamuran—including the Shambezai, Yalanzai, and Durrazai—famously rejected these taxes as unlawful and successfully defended their autonomy against tax-collecting expeditions.[3]
Demographics
As of the 2023 Census of Pakistan, the population of Zamuran Tehsil is 71,616. The population is 100% rural and primarily belongs to various Baloch tribes. The primary language spoken is Balochi. The literacy rate in the tehsil is approximately 28.97%.[1]
Economy
The economy is predominantly rural and tribal. Traditional means of livelihood include:
- Agriculture: Small-scale farming in valleys supported by mountain springs.
- Livestock: Rearing of sheep and goats is common among nomadic and semi-nomadic residents.
- Trade: Due to its proximity to the Iran–Pakistan border, the region is a corridor for local cross-border trade.
