Jason Gilbert Hayden Londt, né le à Johannesburg et mort le , est un entomologiste sud-africain spécialiste des familles afro-tropicales des Bittacidae et des Asilidae.

Biographie

Jason Gilbert Hayden Londt est né à Johannesburg en Afrique du Sud le [1].

Après avoir fréquenté les écoles de Parkview Junior, Parkview Senior et la Parktown Boys’ High Schools de Johannesburg. Il suit toute sa formation universitaire à l'université Rhodes de Grahamstown dans la province du Cap de Bonne-Espérance où il mène des recherches sur les tiques. Il s'intéresse également aux mécoptères et commence ses recherches taxonomiques sur ce groupe pendant ses études. De 1971 à 1973, il occupe un poste de chargé de recherche au sein de la nouvelle unité de recherche sur les tiques du département de zoologie et d'entomologie de l'université Rhodes, période durant laquelle il participe également à l'enseignement de l'entomologie[1].

En 1974, il reçoit la bourse postdoctorale « Esmé Fairbairn » de l'université de Londres et y mène des recherches sur divers espèces de tiques britanniques, notamment Ixodes trianguliceps, sous la direction du professeur Don R. Arthur, chef du département de zoologie du King's College de Londres. Il consacre également une partie de son temps à des travaux taxonomiques sur les mécoptères afro-tropicaux au Musée d'histoire naturelle de Londres. Au cours de son séjour en Europe, il collecte des insectes en Allemagne, en Suisse, aux Pays-Bas et au Royaume-Uni[1].

En 1975, après ses études d'un an à Londres, il accepte un poste de cadre supérieur à l'Institut vétérinaire d'Onderstepoort à Prétoria (Afrique du Sud) où il continue de travailler sur la biologie et l'écologie des tiques du bétail d'Afrique australe (Ixodidae), principalement la tique bleue (Boophilus decoloratus) et la tique à pattes rouges (Rhipicephalus evertsi). En 1976, il devient directeur adjoint du musée du KwaZulu-Natal à Pietermaritzburg (Afrique du Sud) et commence ses recherches sur les Asilidae. Il devient directeur du même musée en 1994 et prend sa retraite le mais continue à étudier et à ajouter des mouches et autres insectes à la collection du musée[1].

Marié à Ann Parkin en 1968, il a eu trois enfants, Brendan, Cynthia et Hilary[1].

Œuvre entomologique

Jason Gilbert Hayden Londt a collecté des spécimens dans dix pays africains, quatre pays européens et un pays d'Amérique centrale, et a constitué une collection de plus de 21 700 spécimens d'Asilidae et de 65 000 spécimens d'insectes, presque tous conservés au musée du KwaZulu-Natal[1].

Pendant plus de 50 ans de travaux taxonomiques, Jason Londt a publié 137 articles scientifiques[1] et a décrit de nombreuses espèces[3].
