José Gabriel Funes, né le 31 janvier 1963 à Córdoba (Argentine) est un prêtre jésuite argentin et astronome. Il a été directeur de l’observatoire astronomique du Vatican (à Castelgandolfo) de 2006 à 2015.

Né le 31 janvier 1963 à Córdoba en Argentine, Jose Funes entre dans la Compagnie de Jésus le 11 mars 1985. Au terme de sa formation religieuse et sacerdotale, avec des études de théologie à l’université grégorienne de Rome, Funes est ordonné prêtre le 2 décembre 1995.

Très tôt porté vers l’astronomie il a déjà un master en astronomie de l’université de Córdoba (Argentine) lorsqu’il entre chez les jésuites (1985). Après son ordination sacerdotale il se spécialise en astronomie à l’université de Padoue (Italie) où il obtient son doctorat en l’an 2000. Chercheur à l’observatoire astronomique du Vatican en 2000, il en devient le directeur le 19 août 2006, succédant à ce poste au père George Coyne^[1],[2].

Il n'exclut pas une vie extraterrestre^[3],[4].
