Josiah Cleaveland Cady, plus communément appelé J. Cleaveland Cady, est un architecte américain né en et mort le . On lui doit notamment l'aile sud du Musée américain d'histoire naturelle de la ville de New York dans le style néo-roman appelé « roman richardsonien ».
Biographie
Cady est le fils d’un doyen d’université, président de la société anti-esclavagiste de Rhode Island[1],[2],[3]. Étudiant de Trinity College à Hartford (Connecticut) en 1857, Josiah Cady aurait poursuivi ses études jusqu'en 1860[4],[5]:2, sans cependant y obtenir aucun diplôme[5]:2.
De 1857 à 1864, Cady poursuivit ses études d’architecture à New York auprès d’un Allemand[6],[5]:3, et appris l’aquarelle auprès d’Alfred Fredericks[7].
Cady travailla d'abord comme projeteur pour le cabinet Town & Davis de New York[7],[5]:3. En 1857, il participa à la fondation de l’American Institute of Architects (AIA), auquel il ne sera admis qu'à son enregistrement comme architecte en 1864[8],[5]:5–6. Il y a donné une conférence sur l'architecture coloniale néerlandaise de la Nouvelle-Angleterre[9] et un article sur l'architecture des operas[8].
Il ouvrit son propre cabinet en 1864[10]. Un journal local, le Brooklyn Union, le dépeint comme « un jeune homme de talent et de goût, particulièrement actif[11]. » Installé au n°111 de Broadway, dans le Trinity Building, il y employait des douzaines de projeteurs, dont beaucoup seront de futurs collaborateurs[10],[5]:3, tels Rider & Alden à Hartford[10] ou Henry M. Cougdon[11], Milton See (1854–1920), Louis DeCoppet Berg[5]:3–4, 10,[5]:3–4 ou Bradford L. Gilbert[12].
En 1880, Cady construisit pour deux sœurs, Katherine Miller et Charlotte E. Hopkins, un manoir anglais au n°1826 de Massachusetts Avenue à Washington face au Dupont Circle[13],[14].
