Robert Lawrence « Larry » Trask (10 novembre 1944 – 27 mars 2004) est un linguiste américain, spécialiste reconnu du basque et de la linguistique historique^[1]^,^[2].

Biographie

Né dans l’État de New York aux États‑Unis, Larry Trask étudie d’abord la chimie avant de s’orienter vers la linguistique^[1]. Après une brève période au sein des Peace Corps, il entreprend des études supérieures en linguistique et obtient un doctorat à l’université de Londres^[2]. Il enseigne ensuite dans plusieurs établissements du Royaume-Uni avant de rejoindre l’université du Sussex, où il devient professeur de linguistique^[3].

Il est reconnu comme un spécialiste de la langue basque^[4]. Trask est également considéré comme une autorité en linguistique historique, domaine dans lequel il a publié plusieurs ouvrages de référence^[1]. Il s’est notamment intéressé aux questions relatives à l’origine du langage et a publié plusieurs ouvrages d’introduction à la discipline, dont Language: The Basics (1995) et Introducing Linguistics (2000, avec Bill Mayblin)^[5]^,^[6].

Il est également l’auteur de plusieurs dictionnaires spécialisés en linguistique, parmi lesquels A Dictionary of Grammatical Terms in Linguistics (1993), A Dictionary of Phonetics and Phonology (1996), A Student’s Dictionary of Language and Linguistics (1997), Key Concepts in Language and Linguistics (1999), The Dictionary of Historical and Comparative Linguistics (2000) et The Penguin Dictionary of English Grammar (2000)^[7]^,^[8]^,^[9]^,^[10]^,^[11]^,^[12].

Il travaillait à la compilation d’un dictionnaire étymologique du basque au moment de son décès, survenu à l’âge de 59 ans^[1]. Ses recherches avaient été soutenues par une bourse de la Leverhulme Fellowship^[13].
