Roger Eatwell est un historien, politologue et universitaire britannique, actuellement professeur émérite de sciences politiques à l'Université de Bath.

Biographie

Depuis la fin des années 1970, Eatwell se consacre à l'étude du fascisme et du populisme. Il définit le fascisme comme une idéologie syncrétique, susceptible de séduire à la fois les masses et les intellectuels dans certains pays. Ce fascisme s'articule autour de trois axes principaux : la nécessité de créer une nation unifiée transcendant les divisions ; la formation d'une élite de l'Homme nouveau et d'un peuple profondément attaché à cette nation ; et la construction d'un État autoritaire de troisième voie (ni communiste ni capitaliste). Eatwell s'attache à distinguer le fascisme du populisme, tant historique que contemporain, qu'il perçoit comme reposant sur trois axes très différents : la nécessité de répondre à la volonté populaire ; la défense du peuple (semblable au Volk allemand) ; et la critique des élites économiques et politiques libérales opportunistes.

Dans son ouvrage sur le national populisme, l'accent est mis sur quatre facteurs de long terme, qu'il désigne par les « 4D » : la méfiance croissante envers les élites politiques dans les démocraties libérales ; les craintes grandissantes quant à la destruction des communautés nationales et locales ; les préoccupations croissantes liées à la précarité relative et les angoisses pour l'avenir ; et la désaffection croissante envers les partis traditionnels. Bien que les travaux d'Eatwell sur la politique contemporaine portent principalement sur les partis qui (contrairement au fascisme historique) rejettent la violence, il a également abordé le risque d'« extrémisme cumulatif », c'est-à-dire le phénomène où une forme de violence en engendre une autre dans une spirale dangereuse – une spirale susceptible de s'amplifier si la vague populiste actuelle s'essouffle, laissant une population encore plus en colère[1].
