Veeravalli Seshadri [1] Varadarajan ( – )[2],[3] est un mathématicien indien de l'université de Californie à Los Angeles, qui a travaillé dans de nombreux domaines des mathématiques, notamment les probabilités, les groupes de Lie et leurs représentations, la mécanique quantique, les équations différentielles et la supersymétrie.
Biographie
Le père de Varadarajan, Seshadri, est inspecteur des écoles au ministère de l'Éducation. Il est transféré à Madras où la langue d'enseignement est généralement l'anglais. Après avoir terminé ses études secondaires, Varadarajan rejoint le collège intermédiaire pendant deux ans au Loyola College de Madras où il apprend les mathématiques avec K. A. Adivarahan, un disciplinaire très strict qui lui fait forte impression[4],[5]. Varadarajan obtient son diplôme de premier cycle en 1957 au Presidency College de Madras et son doctorat en 1960 à l'Institut indien de statistiques de Calcutta, sous la supervision de Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao[6]. Il est l'un des « quatre célèbres »[7] à l'Institut indien de statistiques entre 1956 et 1963 (les autres étant R. Ranga Rao, K. R. Parthasarathy et Srinivasa Varadhan).
En 1960, Varadarajan rejoint l'université de Princeton comme boursier postdoctoral. À l'automne 1960, il rejoint l'université de Washington à Seattle, où il passe l'année universitaire, suivie d'une année au Courant Institute de l'université de New York. Il retourne à l'Institut indien de statistique en 1962[8].
Il rejoint le département de mathématiques de l'université de Californie à Los Angeles (UCLA) en 1965. Varadarajan est membre de l'Institute for Advanced Study pendant les périodes de à et de à [9].
En , l'UCLA annonce que Varadarajan et son épouse ont fait don d'un million de dollars au département de mathématiques de l'UCLA pour créer la chaire invitée Ramanujan[10].
Contributions
Les premiers travaux de Varadarajan, dont sa thèse de doctorat, portent sur la théorie des probabilités. Il se tourne ensuite vers la théorie des représentations, où il réalise certains de ses travaux les plus connus. Il travaille également en physique mathématique, notamment en théorie quantique et sur les thèmes p-adiques en physique. Dans les années 1980, il écrit une série d'articles avec Donald Babbitt sur la théorie des équations différentielles à singularités irrégulières. Ses travaux les plus récents portent sur la supersymétrie.
Il introduit les déterminants Kostant-Parthasarathy-Ranga Rao-Varadarajan (KPRV determinants) avec Bertram Kostant, K. R. Parthasarathy et R. Ranga Rao en 1967[11], le théorème de Trombi-Varadarajan en 1972[12] et les modules d'Enright-Varadarajan en 1975[13].
Il reçoit la médaille Onsager en 1998 pour ses travaux. Il est reconnu, aux côtés de 23 membres indiens et indo-américains « ayant apporté une contribution exceptionnelle à la création, à l'avancement de l'exposé, à la communication et à l'utilisation des mathématiques » par le programme des Fellows de l'American Mathematical Society, le [14].
