Don't Tap the Glass è l'ottavo album in studio del rapper statunitense Tyler, the Creator, pubblicato il 21 luglio 2025 dalla Columbia.

Antefatti e pubblicazione

Don't Tap the Glass fu presentato per la prima volta durante il concerto di Tyler, the Creator del 18 luglio 2025 a New York City, parte del Chromakopia: the World Tour: un'installazione artistica, raffigurante una figura racchiusa in una scatola trasparente con quelli che sarebbe poi stato confermato come il titolo dell'album riportato davanti, è stata affissata al di fuori dell'impianto Barclays Center.[6] Tyler, the Creator aveva già confermato sulla rete sociale di avere qualcosa in programma per la data del 21 luglio, senza fornire in tale circostanza ulteriori dettagli.

Al termine del concerto, il sito web gestito dall'artista Golf Wang fu aggiornato con nuovo merchandising, inclusi dischi in vinile, magliette e cappelli riportanti il marchio dell'album.[7][8] Successivamente venne anche creato un sito web apposito, una pagina esclusiva per il merchandising dell'album, insieme a un martello interattivo come cursore che rompe il vetro ogni volta che viene cliccato, proiettando ironia sul titolo dell'album. Dopo dieci clic, il sito web avrebbe riprodotto un teaser audio per l'album.[7]

Il 19 luglio 2025, la rivista Complex pubblicò su Twitter una lista tracce rivelatasi inventata, che riportava erroneamente la partecipazione di Kendrick Lamar e Earl Sweatshirt, tra gli altri. Il post ottenne successo tra i fan, finché Tyler, the Creator rispose affermando che l'informazione fosse falsa; Complex successivamente cancellò il tweet e si scusò pubblicamente.[9] Tyler ha inoltre smentito le voci secondo cui l'album sarebbe stato un concept album.[10] In un'intervista con Zane Lowe, Tyler ha descritto la rapida uscita dell'album come «liberatoria», affermando: «Non volevo passare tre anni a cercare di essere super innovativo. [...] Amico, ho fatto un album e il gioco era fatto».[11] Ha dichiarato che l'obiettivo dell'album era «essere divertente e dire cose scandalose, e dire cose che… sono battute private che fanno ridere me e i miei amici, e semplicemente sparare cazzate da grandi» e che «voleva semplicemente tornare a fare lo sciocco».[12]

Alla vigilia dell'uscita dell'album, Tyler ha organizzato un listening party all'Hollywood Forever Cemetery, promuovendolo con lo slogan "Don’t Come If You Aren’t Going To Dance" ("Non venite se non avete intenzione di ballare").[13][14] In seguito, ha detto ai fan che era stata una delle «serate più belle della mia vita» e ha incoraggiato gli ascoltatori a godersi l'album «a tutto volume» mentre «ballano, guidano [o] corrono».[15][16][17] In un post sui social media, Tyler ha parlato apertamente degli effetti delle riprese video durante i concerti, attribuendoli al calo della voglia di ballare:[15]

«Ho chiesto ad alcuni amici perché non ballano in pubblico e alcuni mi hanno risposto che è per paura di essere ripresi. Ho pensato: "Cavolo, una forma naturale di espressione e quel legame che hanno con la musica sono ormai solo un ricordo". Mi sono chiesto quanta parte del nostro spirito umano sia stata soffocata dalla paura di diventare un meme, solo per il gusto di divertirsi... Questo album non è stato fatto per stare fermi. Ballare, guidare, correre, qualsiasi tipo di movimento è consigliato per cercare di coglierne lo spirito. Solo a tutto volume.»

Don't Tap the Glass è stato pubblicato il 21 luglio 2025 dalla Columbia Records.[16]

Promozione

Poche ore dopo l'uscita dell'album, Tyler, the Creator ha pubblicato il video musicale di Stop Playing with Me, in cui compaiono nei cameo i Clipse (i fratelli Pusha T e Malice), LeBron James e Maverick Carter.[18] Il 23 luglio 2025, Tyler ha organizzato un secondo listening party all'Under the ‘K’ Bridge Park di Brooklyn, New York.[19] Il 12 agosto 2025 è stato pubblicato il video musicale di Sugar on My Tongue, diretto dallo stesso Tyler,[20] mentre il 27 agosto è stato pubblicato il video musicale di Sucka Free.[21]

Per promuovere ulteriormente l'album, Tyler ha intrapreso un tour in America Latina nel marzo 2026, come headliner del Festival Estéreo Picnic e delle edizioni sudamericane del Lollapalooza, oltre a tenere concerti da solista a San José, Città del Messico, Guadalajara e San Juan.[22]

Descrizione

Don't Tap the Glass è stato descritto dai giornalisti come un album rap house,[23] dance,[2][3] house,[3][4] funk[3][4] e techno.[4] Con una durata di ventotto minuti e trenta secondi, Don't Tap the Glass è l'album in studio più breve della discografia di Tyler, the Creator e la seconda pubblicazione più breve in assoluto, dopo l'EP Music Inspired by Illumination & Dr. Seuss' The Grinch (2018), della durata di dieci minuti e ventidue secondi.[24]

Il brano di apertura, Big Poe, contiene un campionamento di Roked di Shye Ben Tzur all’inizio del brano, oltre a un campionamento di Pass the Courvoisier, Part II di Busta Rhymes, con la partecipazione di Sean Combs e Pharrell Williams.[25] La settima traccia, Don't Tap That Glass / Tweakin', è un brano in stile bounce di New Orleans.[12] L'ottava traccia, Don't You Worry Baby, presenta elementi di Atlanta bass e Miami bass.[12] Il nono brano, I'll Take Care of You, è una canzone jungle[12] e contiene campionamenti tratti da Cherry Bomb di Tyler, the Creator e da Knuck If You Buck dei Crime Mob, con la partecipazione di Lil Scrappy.[26]

Per questo album, Tyler, the Creator ha tratto ispirazione da molte altre cose che lo circondano e dalla sua infanzia, spaziando da una grande varietà di persone a oggetti concreti. Una band in particolare da cui Tyler ha tratto ispirazione è stata la rock band zambiana nota come Ngozi Family. Quando il famoso intervistatore Nardwuar gli ha mostrato la copertina fisica dell’LP della Ngozi Family intitolato 45,000 Volts, Tyler ha spiegato di apprezzare particolarmente la grafica utilizzata per il retro della copertina. Tyler descrive di amare il ritaglio e i bordi frastagliati della copertina che incorniciano un’immagine dei membri della band raffigurati in modo goffo. L’aspetto dei bordi frastagliati può essere descritto come quello di un bambino che usa delle forbici di sicurezza per ritagliare la figura. Si nota che sulla copia fisica di Don't Tap the Glass, ci sono bordi frastagliati simili attorno alla sua immagine, proprio come sulla copertina dell’LP della Ngozi Family.[27]

Don't Tap the Glass ha ricevuto recensioni positive da parte della critica musicale. La recensione di John Amen per The Line of Best Fit conclude che «Tyler non apre nuove strade, quanto piuttosto prepara il terreno già esistente» e che ciò mette in risalto la sua poliedricità.[34] Shahzaib Hussain dei Clash ha descritto l'album come un «mash-up di brani da discoteca astuti e sinuosi che riduce il sovraccarico concettuale, preme il pulsante di reset e si abbandona al divertimento».[31] In un articolo pubblicato su HotNewHipHop, Gabriel Bras Nevares ha recensito positivamente l'album, definendolo «l'LP più breve, più accattivante, più schietto e più provocatorio di tutta la sua discografia».[39]
