Soprannominata Soul Sister #1,[1][2] Whitney pubblicò delle tracce, come, ad esempio, It's My Thing (You Can't Tell Me Who to Sock It To) (1969), che verranno campionate da numerosi rapper.[3]
Biografia
Il primo successo in classifica di Whitney è It's My Thing (You Can't Tell Me Who to Sock It To) (1969). Nata in risposta a It's Your Thing degli Isley Brothers, raggiunse la posizione numero 19 della classifica R&B di Billboard e la numero 82 della Billboard Hot 100 nel 1969; la traccia verrà campionata dai Public Enemy nella loro Bring the Noise[7] e dagli N.W.A in Fuck tha Police.[8] Pubblicò poi due successi minori: Things Got to Get Better (Get Together) (#22 della classifica R&B) e I Made a Mistake Because It's Only You Pt. 1 (# 32 della classifica R&B);[9] registrò anche canzoni come I'm Tired, I'm Tired, I'm Tired (Things Better Change Before Its Too Late) e If You Don't Work (You Can't Eat).
