A sostituire le retrocesse Bournemouth, Bradford City e Stoke City, dalla Third Division sono state promosse Bristol Rovers, Bristol City, entrambe di ritorno dopo 9 anni di assenza, e Notts County, di ritorno dopo 5 anni di assenza.
A sostituire le promosse Leeds Utd, Sheffield Utd e Sunderland, dalla First Division sono retrocesse Charlton, di ritorno dopo 4 anni di assenza, Sheffield Weds, di ritorno dopo 6 anni di assenza, e Millwall, di ritorno dopo 2 anni di assenza.
Aggiornamenti
Lo Swindon Town l'anno precedente aveva vinto la finale dei playoff contro il Sunderland AFC, ma il Sunderland fu promosso in First Division dopo che lo Swindon ammise che stava affrontando una situazione economica molto complicata.
Per questa stagione ci fu una promozione in più per riportare la First Division a 22 squadre.
