The Persuasions è stato un gruppo a cappella statunitense, formatosi nel 1962 a Brooklyn, New York. Iniziarono esibendosi sotto i lampioni agli angoli delle strade e sulle banchine della metropolitana, con uno stile costituito da un impasto di gospel, soul, rock delle origini e jazz sviluppato con armonie a cinque voci.

Storia

La formazione registrò il primo singolo per la Minit/United Artists Records nel 1966. L'anno successivo David Dashev, fan del doo-wop, incise su nastro una loro esibizione a Jersey City e fece recapitare la registrazione a Frank Zappa; questi li chiamò perché realizzassero il loro primo album, A Cappella. Pubblicato nel 1968 per l'etichetta discografica di Zappa, la Straight Records, l'LP era in parte eseguito dal vivo e in parte registrato in studio.[1][2] Nel 1971, il gruppo aprì i concerti dei The Mothers of Invention alla Carnegie Hall; il concerto dell'11 ottobre fu registrato e pubblicato in un cofanetto eponimo.[3]

Nel 1990, i Persuasions parteciparono allo speciale televisivo della PBS Spike Lee & Company - "Do It A Cappella". Diversi anni dopo, Rip Rense, un giornalista professionalmente legato a Zappa, diresse il gruppo e lo incoraggiò a realizzare un album tributo a Zappa, dal titolo Frankly A Cappella, che venne pubblicato nel 2000 dalla Earthbeat Records. In seguito, il gruppo registrò degli album tributo dedicati ai Grateful Dead (Might as Well) e ai Beatles (The Persuasions Sing The Beatles).[4]

Negli anni a seguire, la formazione incise altri due album tributo, Persuasions Sing U2 e Knockin' on Bob's Door, dedicato a Bob Dylan. Oltre ad incidere album in studio, il gruppo fu di supporto vocale ai lavori di Liza Minnelli, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder e Joni Mitchell.[1]

Herbert "Toubo" Rhoad, uno dei membri originari dei Persuasions, morì nel 1988 durante una tournée e Raymond Sanders subentrò come voce aggiuntiva. Sweet Joe Russell morì nel 2012, il basso James Caldon Hayes nel maggio 2017 e Jerry Lawson nel luglio 2019. Gruppi molto diversi tra loro, quali Take 6, Rockapella, The Nylons e Boyz II Men, considerano i Persuasions una delle loro principali fonti di ispirazione.
