The Velvelettes è stato un gruppo musicale femminile statunitense di genere R&B, pop e soul. Pubblicarono diversi brani da classifica, tra cui Needle in a Haystack (1964), He Was Really Sayin' Somethin' (1965) e These Things Will Keep Me Loving You (1966).

Storia

Originariamente un quintetto, le Velvelettes vennero fondate nel 1961 a Kalamazoo, nel Michigan, da due studentesse della Western Michigan University di nome Bertha Barbee-McNeal e Mildred Gill Arbor.^[1] Il gruppo contava anche la sorella di Mildred Carolyn "Cal" Gill, liceale eletta cantante principale del gruppo, Betty Kelly, anche lei liceale, e Norma Barbee, studentessa presso il Flint Junior College (oggi Mott Community College).^[2]

Dopo essere state scoperte da Robert "Bob" Bullock, nipote del produttore Berry Gordy, le Velvelettes vennero scritturate dalla Motown e, nel 1963, pubblicarono il primo singolo There He Goes, nel quale figura un giovane Stevie Wonder all'armonica.^[2]^[3] Se tale brano non entrò in classifica, ebbe invece molta più fortuna il seguente Needle in a Haystack del 1964. Prodotta da Norman Whitfield, la traccia raggiunse la posizione numero 45 della Billboard Hot 100 e la numero 31 di quella R&B.^[1]^[4] Whitfield produsse anche il seguente singolo He Was Really Sayin' Somethin' del 1965. Il brano raggiunse la posizione numero 64 della Billboard Hot 100 e la numero 21 di quella R&B.^[5] Il brano verrà reinterpretato dalle Bananarama, le Buffalo G e i Shakespears Sister.

Betty Kelly abbandonò le Velvelettes il settembre 1964, riducendo così il numero dei membri a quattro.^[1]

Degna di menzione è anche These Things Will Keep Me Loving You del 1966. Nonostante il successo modesto in patria (raggiunse infatti la posizione numero 102 nella classifica pop americana e la numero 43 di quella R&B), si inserirà, grazie alla visibilità conferitale dai disc jockey della scena Northern soul britannica, nella trentaquattresima posizione della UK Singles Chart nel 1971. These Things Will Keep Me Loving You è l'unica traccia delle Velvelettes inseritasi in una classifica del Regno Unito.^[2]^[4]^[6]

Nel 1967, Gill, Norma e Bertha Barbee-McNeal abbandonarono il gruppo per dedicare più tempo alle loro famiglie. Al loro posto si aggiunsero Sandra Tilley e Annette McMillan.^[2] Il gruppo si sciolse nel 1970, dopo che Tilley entrò a far parte delle Vandellas.^[1]

Si assistette a una reunion della band negli anni 1980. Il gruppo si sciolse nuovamente negli anni 2020.^[1]
