Spilornis – rodzaj ptaków z podrodziny jastrzębi (Accipitrinae) w rodzinie jastrzębiowatych (Accipitridae).
Rozmieszczenie geograficzne
Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Azji Południowej, Południowo-Wschodniej i Wschodniej[6][7].
Morfologia
Długość ciała 38–74 cm, rozpiętość skrzydeł 85–169 cm; masa ciała 420–1800 g[7].
Systematyka
Rodzaj zdefiniował w 1832 roku irlandzki zoolog Nicholas Aylward Vigors w artykule zatytułowanym Setka ptaków z gór Himalajów, opublikowanym w czasopiśmie „Proceedings of the Committee of Science and Correspondence of the Zoological Society of London”[2]. Gatunkiem typowym jest (oznaczenie monotypowe) wężojad czubaty (S. cheels). Jednak nazwa którą ukuł Vigors − Haematornis − użyto wcześniej do opisania innego rodzaju ptaków, dlatego w 1840 roku angielski ornitolog George Robert Gray w publikacji własnego autorstwa zatytułowanej Wykaz rodzajów ptaków, z ich synonimami oraz wskazaniem gatunku typowego dla każdego rodzaju[1], nadał rodzajowi opisanemu przez Vigorsa nową nazwę − Spilornis.
Etymologia
- Haematornis: gr. αἱμα haima, αἱματος haimatos ‘krew’; ορνις ornis, ορνιθος ornithos ‘ptak’[8]. Gatunek typowy: Falco cheela Latham, 1790.
- Spilornis: gr. σπιλος spilos ‘cętka, plamka’; ορνις ornis, ορνιθος ornithos ‘ptak’[9].
Gatunek typowy (oznaczenie monotypowe): Falco cheela Latham, 1790.
Podział systematyczny
Do rodzaju należą następujące gatunki[13]:
- Spilornis cheela (Latham, 1790) – wężojad czubaty
- Spilornis klossi Richmond, 1902 – wężojad nikobarski
- Spilornis kinabaluensis W.L. Sclater, 1919 – wężojad górski
- Spilornis rufipectus Gould, 1858 – wężojad celebeski
- Spilornis elgini (Blyth, 1863) – wężojad andamański
