Despoti i Epirit ishte sunduesi i Despotatit të Epirit, një shtet pasues i Perandorisë Bizantine pas Kryqëzatës së Katërt. Emri "Despotati i Epirit" dhe titulli "despot i Epirit" janë emra historiografikë modernë, pasi nuk ishin në përdorim nga vetë despotët. Në Perandorinë Bizantine, titulli i Despotit ([δεσπότης] Error: {{Lang}}: invalid parameter: |3= (help)) ishte një titull prestigjoz oborri dhe nuk përcaktonte sundimin mbi ndonjë territor specifik. Megjithëse majft sundues epirotë përdornin titullin despot, ai nuk ishte asnjëherë në referencë të tokave që ata qeverisnin, por në referencë të pozicionit të tyre në hierarkinë bizantine.
Vetëm pasi Epiri ra në duart e dinastive të tjera që titulli i despotit u përdor jo për hierarkinë perandorake, por për sundues të të një territori, ndonjëherë për habinë e popullsisë vendore. "Despoti i Epirit" nuk është rregjistruar në dokumente bashkëkohore për sunduesit e tjerë, por ka mjaft versione të tjera, siç janë "despoti i Artaës" dhe "despoti i Janinës", dy kryeqytetet e despotatit në pika të ndryshme kohore. Disa sundues përdorën versionin "despot i Romanisë" (Romania thelbësisht i referohej territoreve të Perandorisë Romake, d.m.th. Bizantit) ose "despot i Romakëve" (duke pretenduar sundimin mbi Romaioit, d.m.th. bizantinët/grekët).
Despoti i fundit i Epirit qe Leonardo III Tocco, i cili sundoi nga viti 1448 deri në vitin 1479, kur mbetjet e despotatit u pushtuan nga Perandoria Osmane. Leonardo ia mbathi në ekzil dhe pasardhësit e tij vijuan ta pretendonin titullin deri në vitin 1642.
Kjo do të ndodhte kur Antonio Tocco i kërkoi Mbretit të Spanjës ti jepej titulli i Princit të Akesë, në shkëmbim për titullin e tij të trashëguar të despotit të Epirit dhe kontit palatin të Qefalonisë dhe Zakintos;[2] kjo dhënie e re pasqyronte titullin origjinal princëror të mbajtur nga sunduesit e Principatës së Akesë, por ishte një titull fisnik brenda fisnikërisë napolitane, krahasuar me titullin origjinal sovran.
Titulli
Në periudhën e voën të Perandorisë Bizantine, titulli i despotit ([δεσπότης] Error: {{Lang}}: invalid parameter: |3= (help)) ishte një titull i lartë dhe prestigjoz oborrtar. Ai nuk përdorej si një titull sunduesi të ndonjë zotërimi të caktuar tokësor.[3] Si i tillë, duke iu referuar sunduesve të Despotatit të Epirit (një term jo i kohës së ekzistencës së shtetit) si "despotë të Epirit" është teknikisht i pasaktë.[4] Titulli do të lidhej me territore të caktuara vetëm pasi praktika e perandorëve që ua jepnte titullin princave, duke u dhënë atyre apanazhe gjysmë-autonome për ti qeverisur, u bë e rregullt.[5][6][7] Për më tepër, jo të gjithë sunduesit e Epirit e bartën titullin monarkisë epirote, Mihali I Komnenos Dukas, nuk e përdori asnjëherë titullin dhe as pasuesi i tij, Theodor Komnenos Dukas, i cili faktikisht e kurorëzoi veten perandor (Script error: The function "transl" does not exist.) në Selanik rr. 1225. Sunduesi i parë i Epirit që mori titullin e despotit ishte Mihali II Komnenos Dukas, nga xhaxhai i tij Manueli i Selanikut në vitet 1230, dhe pastaj prapë, si shenjë e nënshtrimit dhe vasalitetit, nga the perandori nikeas Joani III Vatatzes.[8][9]
Përdorimi i një versioni të titullit despot të lidhur faktikisht me territorin filloi nën sundimin e Familjes Orsini, duke pasuar shuarjen e dinastisë origjinale Komnenos Dukas. Me prejardhje italiane, sunduesit Orsini e kthyen titullin e tyre si Despotus Romaniae (Despot i Romania). Epiri ishte pjesë e Romanias (që thelbësisht nënkuptonte Perandorinë Romake Lindore, d.m.th Bizantin).[3] Thomas II Preljuboviç, të cilit iu dha Epiri nga sunduesi i tij i mëparshëm, pretenduesi i fronit perandorak serb Simeon Uroshi, iu dha dinjiteti i despotit nga Simeoni dhe e titulloi veten si "Despot i Janinës" për të përcaktuar sundimin e tij mbi kryeqytetin e tij dhe të gjithë Epirin.[10]
Pasi u bë sundues i Janinës në vitin 1411, Carlo I Tocco mori titullin e despotit, ose si referencë për despotët Komnenos Dukas dhe Orsini, ose për titullin e marë nga Thomas II Preljuboviq. Vendasit këmbëngulën që Carlo të kërkonte njohjen e atij titulli nga perandori bizantin dhe pasi kishte dërguar vëllain e tij, Leonardo II Tocco në Konstandinopojë, perandori Manueli II Paleologu, e njohur atë formalisht si despot.[10] Për Carlo-n, titulli i despotit nënkuptonte se ai mund të pretendonte sundimin e të gjithë Epirit, jo vetëm të Janinës; ai në mënyrë të shquar zaptoi Artën, kryeqytet nën Komnenos Dukas dhe Orsinit, në vitin 1416. Për bizantinët në Kostandinopojë, dhënia e titullit shërbeu më shumë për të mbuluar kontrollin faktik perandorak të rajonit, vetëm duke qenë një referencë nominale për pushtetin e mëparshëm të ushtruar në Epir nga despotët bizantinë.[11] Nga viti 1418 e në vijim, Carlo e ktheu titullin e tij në latinisht si Despotus Romaniae, siç kishin bërë despotët Orsini para tij.[3] Ky titull është përdorur edhe nga Centurione II Zaccaria, princi i Akeas, dhe Carlo mund ta ketë marë atë në vitin 1418, jo si një referencë ndaj sunduesve të mëparshëm të Epirit, por thelbësisht si një uzurpim i titullit të Centurione-s (padroni i tij i mëparshëm feudal), pasi princi i Akeas kishte pësuar humbje shkatërruese të territorit ndaj bizantinëve po atë vit. Burime epirote shkruajnë se titulli Despotus Romaniae u konfirmua nga Manueli II, por burimet bashkohëse bizantine heshtin mbi këtë çështje.[12] Dokumente nga Janina dhe Arta i japin Carlo-s titullin e plotë Dominus Carolus Dei Gratia despotus Romaniae (Zoti Carlo, me hirin e Zotit, despot i Romanisë).[13]
Carlo ndonjëherë përdorte versionin Despotus Romeorum (Despot i Romanëve, d.m.th. bizantinëve) nga viti 1418 e në vijim. Ky version i titullit kishte ndërlikime edhe më të rrezikshme për Kostandinopojën, pasi ai nënkuptonte sundimin mbi vetë bizantinët, në vend të territorit që ata e konsideronin pjesë të perandorisë së tyre. Për bizantinët, një pushtet i tillë mund të ushtrohej ligjërisht vetëm nga perandori.[14] Pasuesi i Carlo I, Carlo II Tocco, përdori titullin Despot i Artës, i cili e lidhte atë me kryeqytetin e vjetër të shtetit epirot, në vend të territorit të Perandorisë Bizantine në përgjithësi. Edhe atëherë, despot i Artës nuk ishte më i pranueshëm për bizantinët sesa despot i Romanisë, pasi titulli ishte akoma në lidhje me një territor të caktuar, në vend se me pozicionin e një despoti të lidhur me perandorin në hierarkinë oborrtare.[15] Ky titull u përdor edhe nga pasuesi i Carlo-s së II, Leonardo III Tocco.[16] Anëtarët e mëpasëm të Familjes Tocco, pretendentë të titullit, për dhe versionin despot i Romanisë, ashtu dhe versionin despot i Artës; në një tekst italian të vitit 1697 titujt despotë të Familjes Tocco përdoren si Despoti de Romanìa, & del'Arta (despotë të Romanisë dhe të Artës).[17]
Në vitin 1359, pas mundjes së despotit Nikefori II Orsini në Betejën e Akelout, prijësit shqiptarë Pjetër Losha dhe Gjin Bua Shpata, përkatësisht në Artë dhe Angjelokastro, do të krijonin dinastitë shqiptare të Epirit, atë të Zenebishëve dhe Despotët e Artës.[18][19][20][21]

Me shkëmbimin e titullit bashkë me atë të kontit palatin të Antonio Tocco-s në vitin 1642, Familja Tocco pushoi së përdoruri titullin despot i Epirit. Vija mashkullore e pasardhësve të Antonios, në fakt filluan të përdornin titullin e tyre të ri të princit të Akeas brenda fisnikërisë napolitane.[46] Ndryshimi i titujve mund ti atribuohet faktit se Familja Tocco ishte pasardhësja kryesore e Thomas Paleologut, Despotit të Moresë,[47] duke pasuar shuarjen e pasardhësve të saj të fundit meshkuj shekullin e XVI.[48] Thomas Paleologu ishte martuar me trashëgimtaren e paracaktuar të Centurione II Zaccaria, princi i Akeas, pas bisedimeve të Chalandritsës midis dy sunduesve në vitin 1429 dhe si i tillë, kishte trashëguar territoret e principatës pas vdekjes së Centuriones në vitin 1432.[47][49]
