Physeteroidea është një superfamilje që sot përfshin tre specie të gjalla të balenave: kashalotin e gjinisë Physeter, dhe kashalotin e vogël e kashalotin xhuxh, të gjinisë Kogia. Në të kaluarën, këto gjini kanë qenë të bashkuara në një familje të vetme, Physeteridae, me dy lloje Kogia në nënfamiljen Kogiinae; megjithatë, kohëve të fundit është ndarë në gjininë Kogia në familjen Kogiidae, duke e lënë Physeteridae si një familje monotipike (vetëm me një lloj ekzistues).
Klasifikimi
Janë të gjithë anëtarë të Odontoceti, nënrend që përmban të gjithë balenat me dhëmbë dhe delfinët. Një lloj ekzistuese i gjinisë Physeter është i vendosur në familje Physeteridae. Dy lloje ekzistuese të gjinisë Kogia, kashaloti i vogël K. breviceps dhe kashaloti xhuxh K. simus, ndonjëherë janë të vendosur në këtë familje, apo janë të vendosur në familjen e tyre, Kogiidae.[1]
