Gerrit Jacobus Heckman, plus connu sous le nom Gert Heckman, est un mathématicien néerlandais né en 1953.

Heckman soutient son doctorat en 1980 à l'université de Leyde sous la direction de Gerrit van Dijk (en) (et Hans Duistermaat)[1] avec une thèse appliquant la méthode des orbites d'Alexander Kirillov aux groupes de Lie compacts pour la description asymptotique des règles de branchement (en), c'est-à-dire le comportement de la restriction de représentations à des sous-groupes. Sa thèse est intitulée Projections of orbits and asymptotic behaviour of multiplicities for compact Lie groups[2],[3]. Après deux ans passés au Massachusetts Institute of Technology[4], il revient à Leyde en 1982 en tant qu'assistant de Gerrit van Dijk. Il est ensuite recruté comme professeur à l'université Radboud de Nimègue où il est à présent professeur émérite.

Heckman est spécialiste de théorie des représentations, des fonctions hypergéométriques, de géométrie symplectique, de géométrie hyperbolique et de physique mathématique (systèmes intégrables). Son nom est attaché à deux objets mathématiques : les fonctions hypergéométriques associées aux systèmes de racines des algèbres de Lie, appelées « fonctions hypergéométriques de Heckman-Opdam », nommées d'après des travaux en commun avec Eric Opdam (en), et la formule de Duistermaat-Heckman (1982) en géométrie symplectique, d'après des travaux avec Hans Duistermaat.

Il s'est également intéressé à la présentation de la démonstration des lois de Kepler dans les écoles. Ce travail lui a permis une analyse nouvelle de la démonstration originale d'Isaac Newton.

Il est rédacteur du journal Indagationes Mathematicae.
