Palgrave's Golden Treasury

Le Golden Treasury of English Songs and Lyrics est une anthologie populaire de poésie anglaise, initialement sélectionnée pour publication par Francis Turner Palgrave (en) en 1861^[1].

L'anthologie a, selon son auteur, pour but de présenter un travail répondant à la description des « meilleures pièces et chansons lyriques originales dans notre langue »^[2]. Elle a été considérablement révisée, avec la contribution d'Alfred Tennyson, une trentaine d'années plus tard. Palgrave a exclu tous les poèmes de poètes encore vivants à cette époque^[3].

À partir des premiers poètes modernes, sa première édition porte quatre livres jusqu'à la fin de la période romantique ; les éditions ultérieures vont plus loin. L'auteur, comme nombre d'autres éditeurs, n’inclut pas les contemporains, ne sachant pas qui résistera à l’épreuve du temps^[2].

Elle continue d'être régulièrement réédité, toujours sous le nom de Palgrave. Ces éditions reprennent les sélections et les notes de l'auteur, mais comprennent généralement un supplément de poèmes plus récents. En 1991, Christopher Ricks (en) a publié une édition critique du recueil original, accompagnée d'un exposé de son évolution de 1861 à 1891, recensant les ajouts et les suppressions.

En six mois, elle s'est vendue à 10.000 exemplaires ; en 2023, à des centaines de milliers^[2].

En 1924, Laurence Binyon prolonge le recueil qui s'arrêtait à l'époque victorienne jusqu’au début du siècle. Reprenant la démarche de son prédécesseur, il s'attache à n’inclure que des poèmes narratifs, descriptifs et didactiques tels qu’ils sont « accompagnés par la rapidité du mouvement, la brièveté et la coloration de la passion humaine ». Il n'a pas inclus le travail des poètes vivant dans les dominions britanniques d'outre-mer ou américains^[4]. Cette version en cinq livres est rééditée dans la collection Penguin Popular Classics.

Une édition importante a été éditée en 1954 par Cecil Day-Lewis chez Collins, qui devint plus tard poète lauréat. Elle contenait 229 Poèmes Supplémentaires, répartis en quatre livres (I à IV), et comprenait notamment des poèmes de plusieurs poètes américains.
