Caryothraustes – rodzaj ptaków z rodziny kardynałów (Cardinalidae).
Rozmieszczenie geograficzne
Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Meksyku, Ameryce Centralnej i Południowej[2].
Morfologia
Długość ciała 14,4–19,5 cm, masa ciała 31–53,1 g[3].
Systematyka
Rodzaj zdefiniował w 1850 roku niemiecki botanik i zoolog Ludwig Reichenbach w publikacji własnego autorstwa zatytułowanej Avium systema naturale. Naturalny system ptaków zawierający sto tablic z przeważającą większością oryginalnych ilustracji przedstawiających prawie tysiąc dwieście typowych form odkrytych do tej pory. Prekursor ikonografii gatunków ptaków ze wszystkich części świata[1]. Gatunkiem typowym jest (późniejsze oznaczenie)[4] kostogryz maskowy (C. canadensis).
Etymologia
Caryothraustes: gr. καρυον karuon ‘orzech’; φραυστης thraustēs ‘łamacz’, od φραυω thrauō ‘łamać’[5].
Podział systematyczny
Do rodzaju należą następujące gatunki[6]:
- Caryothraustes poliogaster (Du Bus, 1847) – kostogryz białobrzuchy
- Caryothraustes canadensis (Linnaeus, 1766) – kostogryz maskowy
