Passerina – rodzaj ptaków z rodziny kardynałów (Cardinalidae).
Rozmieszczenie geograficzne
Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Ameryce Północnej (z Ameryką Środkową włącznie)[9].
Morfologia
Długość ciała 12,5–19 cm, masa ciała samic 11,9–32,5 g, samców 12,5–40,5 g[10].
Systematyka
Rodzaj zdefiniował w 1816 roku francuski ornitolog Louis Pierre Vieillot w publikacji własnego autorstwa zatytułowanej Analiza nowej ornitologii podstawowej [2]. Gatunkiem typowym jest (późniejsze oznaczenie)[11] łuszczyk indygowy (P. cyanea).
Etymologia
- Passerina: łac. passerinus ‘jak wróbel’ (tj. rozmiaru wróbla), od passer, passeris ‘wróbel’[12].
- Spiza: gr. σπιζα spiza ‘zięba’, od σπιζω spizō ‘ćwierkać’[13]. Gatunek typowy (późniejsze oznaczenie)[14]: Fringilla cyanea A. Wilson, 1810 (= Tanagra cyanea Linnaeus, 1766).
- Guiraca: guar. Guihrá ‘ptak’. Nie jest jasne, jaki związek ma ta nazwa w języku guarani z łuszczykiem błękitnym, którego opis pochodzi z Karoliny, choć Swainson mógł sądzić, że jest to nazwa pochodząca z języka nahuatl[15]. Gatunek typowy (późniejsze oznaczenie)[16]: Loxia caerulea Linnaeus, 1758.
- Aurella: łac. aura ‘blask, światło’; przyrostek zdrabniający -ella[17].
- Coccoborus: gr. κοκκος kokkos ‘zboże, nasiono’; -βορος -boros ‘pożerający’, od βιβρωσκω bibrōskō ‘zjeść’[18]. Gatunek typowy (oznaczenie monotypowe): Loxia caerulea Linnaeus, 1758.
- Goniaphaea: gr. γωνια gōnia ‘róg, kąt’; φη phē ‘jak’[19]. Gatunek typowy (oryginalne oznaczenie): Loxia caerulea Linnaeus, 1758.
- Cyanospiza: gr. κυανος kuanos ‘ciemnoniebieski’; σπιζα spiza ‘zięba’, od σπιζω spizō ‘ćwierkać’[20].
